About Thulusdhoo
Thulusdhoo is the administrative capital of Kaafu Atoll and historically known for its soda factory, once the only local producer of carbonated drinks. It covers 0.42 km² and has a population of 1,873 (2023). The island’s harbor supports inter-atoll cargo, fishing vessels, and public transport. Thulusdhoo hosts the atoll council, regional police station, and a large secondary school. Fishing remains active, especially for reef fish and bait. The surrounding reef platform includes coral rubble flats and seagrass beds. Coconut palms, breadfruit trees, and planted shrubs form the island’s greenery. A waste management center and desalination plant support the growing population. Thulusdhoo’s historical relevance includes its role in trade and administration. Rainwater harvesting complements its freshwater supply system. The island’s developed layout, government services, and ecological setting make it a regional node of governance and services within the central Maldives.
