About Dhiffushi

Dhiffushi is the easternmost inhabited island of the Maldives, experiencing the country’s first sunrise daily. It spans 0.43 km² with a population of 1,165 (2023). The island is known for its elongated shape, shallow lagoon, and accessible reef flat, supporting traditional pole-and-line tuna fishing. Coastal vegetation includes coconut palms and screwpines, with planted breadfruit trees in interior zones. Dhiffushi maintains a harbor, a school, health center, mosque, and council facilities. The surrounding waters support bait fishing, and a sandbank to the east is used seasonally. The island uses rainwater harvesting and a community-managed water system. While land area is limited, the population density is managed through vertical housing and efficient use of space. Local employment centers on fishing, small businesses, and public services. Dhiffushi’s location makes it valuable for inter-island transport across the eastern Kaafu channel, and it remains connected to historical trade and navigation routes across the Maldives’ northern seaboard.
