About Makunudhoo

Makunudu is a small island located on the western side of Male' Atoll. Although it now hosts a resort, the island still holds much of its natural character. The beach is narrow and quiet, lined with mature coconut palms and coastal vegetation. The surrounding reef lies close to shore, with calm, clear waters where reef fish can often be seen. Herons, terns, and fruit bats are familiar sights here, especially during the early hours and late afternoon. In earlier times, fishermen from nearby islands used Makunudu as a resting point during long trips.

While things have changed, the island hasn’t lost its calm atmosphere. The land is not large, but it carries the quietness and simplicity that many small islands once shared. For those who know the atoll well, Makunudu remains one of those places where nature still sets the pace, even with modern activity nearby.

Makunudhoo reef is a large coral formation on the western side of North Malé Atoll. Spanning over 300 hectares, the reef features wide plateaus, coral bommies, and patch reefs. It is frequented by reef sharks, rays, and garden eels. Coral cover includes both hard and soft species, with good visibility for snorkeling and diving. The site lies close to the inhabited island of Makunudhoo (Malé Atoll), distinct from the atoll of the same name in the north.
