About Maalhos

Maalhos has gained recognition for its structured, community-led approach to environmental management, including waste segregation and shoreline protection. The island measures around 0.43 km² and supports a population of approximately 494 residents. It has a registered population of 673 people. Surrounded by a fringing reef, it features diverse marine habitats including coral gardens and sandy lagoons. The reef not only sustains fishing but also buffers the shoreline from storm surges. Local livelihoods revolve around traditional fishing, with pole-and-line methods used to catch tuna, along with small-scale reef fishing. Vegetation includes coconut palms, breadfruit trees, and flowering shrubs that are maintained in community-managed green zones. Infrastructure includes a school, mosque, and health centre. Maalhos is one of the few islands of its size to implement organised solid waste collection and recycling. The settlement is compact, with houses and public facilities arranged for efficient land use. The island’s environmental practices contribute to the resilience of both its community and ecosystem.
